”My spine is crumbling”, ”you cant help me I have osteoarthritis” ,“Your spine is just getting old”.
These are all comments I have had from various patients over the years in my Chiropractic practices and they are all incorrect.
Nowadays I have found that more and more patients come into my clinic having been told that they have osteoarthritis or degeneration as it is otherwise known and they cant do anything about it, they are “just getting old”
It is important to point out that two main events cause osteoarthritis.
1. An ABNORMAL amount of stress going through a NORMAL functioning joint.
2. A NORMAL amount of stress going through an ABNORMAL joint.
You can see between the two statements there is only a subtle difference, the majority of people have “normal joints” meaning the bone has grown correctly from birth so the thing that causes the Osteoarthritis/degeneration in this group of people is EXCESSIVE stress. Stress is generally something we can control as it is an external factor meaning under our control somewhat.
Some good examples of activities that could cause an abnormal amount of stress are,
1. Poor Posture, leading to loss of the spinal curves and loading the discs and joints excessively.
2. High impact sports such as Ice hockey and rugby.
3. Running marathons regularly on tarmac.
So In order to keep your spine functioning better it is important to try and reduce excessive stresses. Improving posture using regular Chiropractic adjustments and exercise is a great way to do this. Remember the S shaped spine for correct posture, I have already written a blog on posture so go take a look at that to refresh your memory.
In regards to point two (A NORMAL amount of stress going through an ABNORMAL joint) an example of an abnormal joint would be a verterba that has grown incorrectly from birth otherwise known as a congential abnormalie. In this situation unfortunately you cannot change this joint as it has grown incorrectly however by working on the compensating structures around this joint such as the other verterbra and muscles you can help reduce some of the stress thus aiding the function of the spine.
So take action in your health and don’t just sit and expect your body to breakdown as you get old instead be proactive and take steps that improve your health. As you “reap what you sow” so plant good seeds of health now and enjoy a more fulfilled healthier future.
