Low back pain is now so common that pretty much all of us have had it or will have it at some point in our lives, Is this normal? should it be happening? The answer is NO! Just because something happens to pretty much all of us it doesn’t mean it is normal it means we probably are all doing the same sorts of things wrong in order to cause it.
What causes low back pain? Well their can be many different areas or structures in your low back that can cause the pain such as overly tight muscles, disc swelling problems, joint irritation however the real reason why these structures become painful in the first place tends to be related to your……. Wait for it… POSTURE.
Posture is so important for decreasing the likelihood of having low back pain as having the correct posture where the spinal bones and their joints are well positioned and the pelvis is perfectly aligned will help decrease the stress that builds up in the surrounding muscles, discs and other pain producing structures.
Sometimes its easier to think of another analogy to help you understand how important your posture is to your overall health so here
is an example for you. If you imagined your car and in that car you have your engine and your axles connected to the engine then your wheels attached to the axels, if these structures are perfectly aligned and are able to freely move then your car runs smoothly and efficiently.
If however your right side of your car you have not pumped your tires correctly with enough air and there is half as much as in the left side then your car would lean more to that right side. When you have more lean you have an imbalance when something is imbalanced their will always be more stress more stress leads to more WEAR and TEAR and more wear and tear leads to a problem with your engine.
Now imagine that car analogy is actually your low back including your lumbar spine bones and your pelvis. If the lumbar spine has a nice natural lumbar lordosis (which means inward curve) and the spinal joints are all moving freely like they should and the pelvis has a slight anterior tilt like it should and is perfectly balanced like it was designed to be, how much stress would be in that structure? How much wear and tear? How easy would it be for those structures to get irritated and start causing you pain? The answer is less stress would occur in these structures and less stress means less irritation and that means less likely to cause pain and problems.
